About Us

Based in the market town of Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire, Whittlesey Sax Choir is a community group for saxophone players of all ages to get together and have fun playing. We meet every two to three weeks with 10-15 players on instruments ranging from the lofty sopranino to the mighty bass, sometimes including rarities like the soprillo, C Melody, or contrabass. We tackle a mix of modern sax ensemble compositions and arrangements of a wide range of classic pieces from William Byrd to Irving Berlin.

History

Whittlesey Saxophone Choir began in early 2022, growing out of the burgeoning Whittlesey Concert Band sax section. Starting with a couple of one-off play-throughs attached to the concert band rehearsals we have steadily grown to have dedicated rehearsals every two or three weeks and attracting players from across the region. We aim to put on at least one performance each year for friends, family, and anyone else who would like to come along and hear what we have been up to.

Purpose

This group was created by the players for the players with the aim of having fun making music together in this somewhat niche format. Our principal aims are:

  1. Have fun playing and learning new music
  2. Improve our individual and ensemble playing skills
  3. Encourage other players and help them improve, no matter their current age or ability
  4. Enjoy the rich sound of a full saxophone choir in action

You can read more about the group's purpose and operation in our constitution.

Rehearsals

We aim to rehearse every two to three weeks during school terms, subject to player and venue availability. Rehearsals are currently held on Sunday afternoons in either Queen Street Methodist Church Hall or St. Mary’s Church, both near the centre of the Whittlesey. A calendar of up-coming rehearsals is now available.

Concerts & events

Whilst the group exists primarily to have fun playing, we do aim to put on at least one concert each year for friends, family, and anyone else who would like to come along and hear what we have been up to. The group has no assets, financial or otherwise, so these concerts are typically free with a collection to raise money for local charities. Please come along and support us, and these worthy causes.

We have two upcoming concerts in 2025, both raising money for charity: "Raising the Roof" on 8th March, and "Veil over Avalon" on 23rd March. Please do come and join us for some fun music and to support these charities. We also recently joined forces with Plural Sax and friends for a whole day of playing.
